New EuGMS Training School in Geriatric Epidemiology and Statistics
Dear Presidents and Representatives of EuGMS Full Member National Societies,
We are pleased to inform you that EuGMS, jointly with the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, will launch a new Training School in Geriatric Epidemiology and Statistics in 2027.
The initiative is designed for early-career professional with a clear career focus on geriatric medicine, gerontology, or the care of older people across Europe who wish to strengthen their skills in clinical research, epidemiology, biostatistics, and ageing research. The programme will combine online teaching modules, close mentorship, and an intensive three-day face-to-face workshop in Florence, immediately before the 2027 EuGMS Congress.
The Training School will support participants in developing an original research project, from the formulation of a clinically relevant research question to study design, data analysis, interpretation of results, and preparation for scientific dissemination. The broader aim is to foster a new generation of clinician-researchers in geriatric medicine and to promote research collaboration across EuGMS Member Societies.
The course will be limited to a maximum of 16 participants in order to ensure an interactive learning environment and close mentorship. For this reason, we kindly invite each EuGMS Member Society to identify and nominate a maximum of 2 suitable candidates for consideration. Each nomination must be presented individually, so the application form has to be filled in for every single candidate.
Eligible candidates proposed by Member Societies should:
- be a member of a EuGMS Member Society;
- be an early-career professional with a clear professional interest in geriatrics. This will include residents or fellows in Geriatric Medicine and early-career geriatricians (up to 5 years after qualifying as a geriatrician). In countries where geriatrics is not a recognized medical specialty, residents in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine may be considered if geriatrics is part of their training and career goal. Other early-career health professionals (e.g. nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, or other allied health professionals) may also be considered if the care of older people is a relevant component of their training, clinical or research activities, and future career goals;
- have sufficient proficiency in English to actively participate in the course;
- demonstrate motivation to develop research skills in geriatric medicine;
- commit to attending the online modules, the three-day face-to-face workshop in Florence (September 2027), and the follow-up activities;
- be willing to develop an original research project during the programme.
Each nominated candidate will be invited to a short online interview with members of the Training School faculty.
Among eligible candidates, final selection will be based on the following criteria:
- previous involvement in the EuGMS activities: being an active member of the ECGI group, SIG involvement, EuGMS Congress active participation;
- Engagement in Geriatric Medicine at National Level (in EuGMS Full Member National Societies);
- motivation and commitment to complete the programme;
- previous research experience in geriatric research;
- gender, ethnicity, and geographical representation and diversity across EuGMS Full Member National Societies.
Selected participants will be informed by email and asked to confirm their participation. A registration fee of €400 will be required. Travel and accommodation costs for the face-to-face workshop in Florence will be the responsibility of the participants.
Applications should be sent by the following link https://forms.gle/F6bUn8BzGUV3G4E29 by October 31.
We would be grateful if your Society could help identify and nominate promising early-career colleagues for this new initiative (max 2 candidates for Full Member National Society).
Please note: To be valid, all nominations must be accompanied by a CV of the candidate. Make sure you send it to secretariat@eugms.org
Thank you very much for your support in promoting training and research capacity in geriatric medicine across Europe.
Best regards,
