The agenda of the meeting is as follows:
• Welcome & Introduction – Marcello Maggio
• Member Survey Proposal - Carly Welch
From Biology of Ageing to Translational Medicine - Luigi Ferrucci
Dr. Ferrucci is a physician, geriatrician, epidemiologist, and internationally recognized leader in the science of aging. Originally trained in medicine and geriatrics at the University of Florence, Italy, he later earned a PhD in the biology and pathophysiology of aging.
Throughout his career, he has remained, first and foremost, a clinician deeply committed to improving the health, function, and well-being of older adults. This clinical perspective has shaped an extraordinary scientific career dedicated to understanding why we age, how aging leads to disability and disease, and how healthier aging can be achieved.
Dr. Ferrucci currently serves as Scientific Director of the National Institute on Aging at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and has led the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging since 2002 - the longest-running scientific study of human aging in the world. Under his leadership, the NIA Intramural Research Program has become the largest and one of the most influential research enterprises on aging worldwide.
Over the past three decades, Dr. Ferrucci’s work has fundamentally transformed the fields of gerontology and geriatrics. His research helped establish the importance of functional status and mobility as central indicators of health in older adults, and his studies have reshaped our understanding of frailty, inflammation, energetics, resilience, and the biological mechanisms of aging.
He has authored more than 2,000 scientific publications, with an H-index of 287, placing him among the most influential researchers in medicine and aging science globally. His contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors, including the Donal P. Kent Award from the Gerontological Society of America and the NIH Director’s Award for Excellence in Mentorship.
Beyond his scientific achievements, colleagues around the world know Dr. Ferrucci as a visionary thinker, a generous mentor, and a passionate advocate for translating discoveries in aging biology into better care and better lives for older people.
