Presidential vision for IAGG activities in education and training and opportunities for EuGMS collaboration
Prof. dr. Hilde Verbeek, IAGG President-ElectProf. dr. Hilde Verbeek is a neuropsychologist by background and currently holds a chair in Long-Term Care Environments at Maastricht University within the Care and Public Health Research Institute, department of Health Services Research. She is the chair of the Limburg Living Lab in Ageing and Long-Term Care, a formal and structural collaboration between 9 long-term care organizations, 2 vocational training institutes (mbo), Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and Maastricht University. Through scientific research, the Limburg Living Lab aims to improve quality of life, care and work in long-term care of older persons and their caregivers. It impacts society through its partnership with multiple stakeholders from various backgrounds, including real-world outcome measures, and involving people that share the passion, and use results to lobby for change. The Limburg Living Lab model of science-society partnership has been adopted internationally (e.g. UK, Germany, Austria and Sweden).
Verbeek’s research focuses on the impact of the environment on everyday life of older persons within long-term care. It is characterised by its interdisciplinary perspective, synthesizing and applying evidence from various scientific disciplines both within care-related fields (e.g. gerontology, psychology, geriatrics, nursing) and beyond (e.g. architecture, service science). Her research is leading in exploring innovative housing with care settings, especially for people living with dementia (e.g. green care farms, collective housing and community-based models). Furthermore, she explores how to transfer these environmental working mechanisms in regular nursing homes. She has published widely (including over 150 peer-reviewed articles, 10 book chapters and various reports). Since 2011, she has obtained approximately 7 million euros in project funding (as Principal Investigator and co-PI) through variety of sources, including European funds such as Horizon2020, ZonMw and the Dutch Government.  Verbeek has successfully supervised 15 PhD students who completed their thesis and is currently supervising 11 PhD students. With her scientific work, Verbeek actively pursues societal impact. For example, policy makers, CEOs and managers use the results of her work in the development of their policy in long-term care.
Verbeek is a member of the Dutch Council for Medicine, and alumna of the Dutch Young Academy, part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in which she was a board member (2022-2024). Furthermore, she is the co-chair of the national chapter of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (www.coara.eu), member of the national steering group Recognition and Reward and serves as the committee chair Recognition and Reward for Maastricht University, aiming to implement a cultural change in academia to improve quality of education, research, impact and leadership. Internationally, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Psychogeriatric Association, is commissioner for The Lancet Commission on Long-Term Care for Older Persons and president-elect for the International Association for Gerontology and Geriatrics (IAGG).
