EuGMS SIG on Perioperative Medicine

 

 

Dear Colleagues,

We are excited to introduce the new EUGMS Perioperative Geriatric Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG), a dedicated forum for healthcare professionals focused on advancing the care of older adults in the perioperative setting. This SIG aims to foster pan-European collaboration and sharing of knowledge, in order to produce high quality research, society consensus statements and guidelines, and create novel educational content. We feel passionately about improving the quality of life for geriatric patients undergoing surgery, and we warmly invite geriatricians, other clinicians, and researchers with a similar interest in perioperative care to join our SIG. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in the field of perioperative geriatric medicine.

  3. Year plan of SIG
    1. April ’25: next SIG meeting (open meeting) – save the date sent
    2. June’25: online webinar – Colorectal cancer theme
    3. Sept ’25: EUGMS congress and formal election for SIG chairs and secretary
    4. Nov ’25: online webinar – proposed Vascular theme (invite Jugdeep to speak)
  4. Membership- increasing awareness of SIG existence to national societies.
    1. FR has written introduction and invitation to be disseminated by EUGMS
    2. Volunteers requested please to disseminate email in their own language via national societies
    3. Are any SIG members also involved in their national societies?
  5. Fellowship recruitment update (Bristol, UK)
    1. Highly subscribed ~35 applicants for the role
    2. Highly competitive field; candidate from Ireland appointed to 12-month paid role (Dr Rory Plant)
  6. Date and proposed content for first SIG Webinar: Focus- colorectal cancer in the older patient.
  7. Expressions of interest for Communications Lead(s).
    1. Volunteers requested for the role to lead on communication of SIG activity, meetings via email and social media.
    2.  Connect with EuGMS secretary for website content and EuGMS social media content.
  8. Training and Education:
    1. Regarding SIG webinars: every member can suggest a webinar theme, presentations, names of speakers etc. This can be discussed during online SIG meetings, and/or send an email to the chairs and secretary.
    2. Discussion of ideas for webinar November 2025.
    3. Regarding EuGMS Congress SIG symposium: every member can suggest a symposium theme, names of speakers etc. To can be discussed during online SIG meetings, and/or send an email to the chairs and secretary.
    4. Exploratory work with EAMA to assess possibility of SIG contributing to education programme
    5. Exploration of feasibility of Perioperative Geriatric Medicine Training Masterclass
    6. Volunteers for Training and education (lead) and establishing priority plan for Training and Education.
  9. Research:
    1. First survey (2025) on geriatric oncology practices. Update by Harmke.
    2. Next (2026), survey to be developed on European perioperative geriatric medicine practice. This survey will aim to build a picture of current level of expertise, training opportunities, service provision across Europe to help guide SIG activity in providing education, training and guideline development.

    3. Volunteers for Research lead - establish priority plan for research projects, seek ideas for collaborative projects, coordinate activity and updates from each project group
