European Training Requirement

The Belgian Inter‑University Course in Geriatric Medicine (BIUCGM) is aligned with the European Training Requirements (ETR) in Geriatric Medicine. These requirements are developed by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) and set out the competencies expected of geriatric medicine specialists. The first ETR was published in October 2020 and updated in 2025. The ETR document defines the essential knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes for the specialty, covering domains such as general principles of geriatric medicine, patient‑care competencies, and additional technical and non‑technical skills. Although no unified European board certification exists, the ETR provides a framework to harmonize training across EU member states.
