EuGMS: SIG on Big Data in Geriatric Oncology: Survival, Frailty and Acute Care through Competing Risks and Explainable Machine Learning

The EuGMS SIG on Big Data is glad to invite you to the next OPEN meeting that will take place on Wednesday 10th June 2026, 17:00 to 18:00 CEST (4 to 5pm UK time).

Big Data in Geriatric Oncology: Survival, Frailty and Acute Care Through Competing Risks and Explainable Machine Learning
Mohamed Mortagy

Dr Mohamed Mortagy is an Internal Medicine resident doctor in Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UK). He holds an MSc in Internal Medicine from the University of Edinburgh, completed the Global Clinical Scholars Research Training (GCSRT) program at Harvard Medical School (USA), and passed the Specialty Certificate Examination in Geriatric Medicine (UK). He is currently completing an MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

His research applies competing-risk survival methods and explainable machine learning to large population databases including SEER, NCRAS, NIS and MIMIC-IV, with a particular interest in geriatric oncology, frailty and acute care outcomes in older adults with cancer. He has authored peer-reviewed publications and had abstracts at UKINETS, ENETS, ESMO, BAD, BGS and ACG meetings. He is a member of the ENETS Lung NEN Task Force, the UKINETS Research and Education Subcommittees, and the EuGMS Special Interest Groups on Big Data, Gero-Oncology, and Education & Training.

Machine Learning Does Not Outperform Clinical Reasoning in Prediction of Adverse Outcomes in Older ED Patients
Simon P. Mooijaart

Simon P. Mooijaart, MD, PhD, is a full professor of Medicine and Geriatrics and chair of Gerontology and Geriatrics at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in Leiden, The Netherlands. His research focuses on developing and delivering appropriate care for older patients across a range of hospital settings, including the Emergency Department. More recently, his work has expanded into the field of AI in Geriatrics. He also serves as Associate Editor of European Geriatric Medicine.
