CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST: EuGMS Working Group on Ethics in Geriatric Medicine

Dear Colleagues,

The European Geriatric Medicine Society (EuGMS) is launching a new Working Group on Ethics in Geriatric Medicine and invites interested members to join this initiative.
Ethical questions are central to both the care and research involving older adults. Daily clinical practice raises complex issues related to autonomy, dignity, consent, vulnerability, resource allocation, and end-of-life decision-making. The new Working Group will provide a dedicated platform within EuGMS for structured reflection, collaboration, and guidance on these topics.
The EuGMS Working Group on Ethics in Geriatric Medicine will also address ethical considerations in the Society’s relationships with external partners, including industry and other stakeholders. This ensures that collaborations, sponsorships, and joint initiatives adhere to high ethical standards, promoting transparency, integrity, and trust.

Objectives
The Working Group will:
• Facilitate discussion and exchange on ethical challenges in geriatric practice, education, and research.
• Develop consensus statements, advice and position papers on key ethical issues relevant to geriatric medicine.
• Provide educational resources, webinars, and congress sessions to support ethical competence among EuGMS members.
• Contribute to policy discussions and advocate for ethically sound approaches to care for older people at the European level.
• Foster collaboration between clinicians, ethicists, researchers, and policymakers in addressing ethical questions in aging and health care.
Participation is open to EuGMS Members (members of a EuGMS Full Member Society, please refer to this link for the complete list: https://www.eugms.org/about-european-geriatric-medicine-society/national-societies ) with an interest in ethical aspects of ageing and healthcare. We particularly welcome clinicians, researchers, ethicists, nurses, social workers, and health law experts. Should the specific expertise not be available among EuGMS members, any member may propose an external candidate who possesses the relevant expertise.

Composition
The Working Group will be composed of up to 10 members, chaired by 2 co-chairs, coordinated by EuGMS Immediate Past President and will operate within the remit and under the oversight of the EuGMS Executive Board.
